Training for teachers & support staff

For schools and colleges signed up to the Virtual-Workspace, we provide structured training (ie Continuing Professional Development) courses and tailored ‘one-off’ training sessions.

Since the launch of the Service in November 2004, the Training Team has trained nearly 1000 teachers and support staff to use the Virtual-Workspace. The impact of this training on their use of the V-W and their students' engagement has been remarkable:

The V-W has offered me a great opportunity to extend my ICT skills, through its e-learning CPD programme, and regular cyber-dialogue with my online support tutor. The benefits to my students have already been numerous.

Christine Pointing, Head of Science, The Chantry High School, Worcestershire

Structured training courses

Staff undertaking one of our structured training courses attend two face-to-face seminars: one at the start of the course and one at the end.

Seminar 1:

  • With the support of their personal online course tutor, staff each develop and deliver an online activity related to the objectives of the course they are undertaking.
  • Staff can take part in weekly discussions with their peers using V-W facilities, ie messaging, community discussion forums, chatrooms.
  • Staff identify and prioritise their training needs and have regular opportunities for self-assessment and feedback.
  • Extension activities are assigned to those who require more challenging assignments.

Seminar 2:

  • This end-of-course seminar gives staff the opportunity to reflect on and share their findings with their peers.
  • On successful completion of the course they are issued a certificate.
  • This may lead to NOCN (National Open College Network – University of Warwick) accreditation.

One-off training sessions

For teachers and support staff unable to take on a structured training course, we offer 'one-off' training sessions for developing key skills. These sessions:

  • can be tailored to meet their individual needs;
  • can be held at their school/college on training days or after school hours;
  • can last anywhere from one hour to a whole day (depending on the needs of the school/college); and
  • have led to 100+ teachers signing up for more extensive training through our structured training courses.

Interested?

If you're interested in taking up a training opportunity - as an individual or as part of a group of staff from your school/college, then go to the 'Staff training' section of your Teaching zone. You'll find full details of all the training courses we're running, and can register your interest or book now through the click of a button.

All training comes as part of the Virtual-Workspace service and at no extra cost to you or your school/college.

Take a tour of the Virtual-Workspace

If only all staff completed a course they would see how the Virtual-Workspace could work for them. It is not until you do a course that you realise how vast the uses for teaching can be. It just encourages the mind to apply the different elements into your teaching.

Mrs Karen Rhodes, Maths Teacher, Coppice Performing Arts School, Wolverhampton

I have found VW to be a great motivational tool, especially in getting those kids who are naturally quiet to make contributions.

Colin Aspley, science teacher, Chilwell School, Nottinghamshire

I think these courses are very good, they enable teachers and staff to provide teaching materials suitable for their students own particular needs, and the VW staff provide all the help that is needed.
